What the original 2p-only version looked like! We ended up playing the game all the way home from Europe as well. And then we were both shoving money at the guy to get our own copy. As the 2-player game takes about 5 minutes, we quickly had a winner. had come to find us to show us the game, we gave it a try at the booth. When I first was introduced to it, I didn’t think much from the game description. I loved this game as a 2-player abstract. Players count up how many hexes they occupy, and the player with the most wins! In case of a tie, the player with the largest contiguous network of occupied hexes wins. Once everyone has moved as much as they can, the game is scored. If your sheep are trapped, and you have no legal moves, you simply pass on your chance to move and await the end of the game. This continues until all players have moved their sheep as much as they can. The next player then takes their turn, doing the same splitting and moving of a stack. The other part is moved, along a straight line, until it either hits the edge of the board (could also be an interior hex if there is a hole in the board) or another stack of sheep. One portion remains on the space on which it started. On each turn, you must divide one of your sheep stacks into two portions (each having at least one sheep token). Once each player has placed their four board pieces to the board, then each player places their entire stack of 16 sheep tokens on an exterior hex. It may be possible to have holes created on the board as players freely choose how to place their pieces. Each successive piece has to be adjacent to at least one other piece already on the board. To set up the board, players take turns placing a board piece on the table. Each board piece is a diamond shaped affair, made up of four individual hexes. Each player gets a stack of 16 sheep tokens as well as a 4 board pieces. The original game is a 2-player-only wooden game that my brother and I discovered at Essen 2010 after Bruno Cathala literally physically dragged us to the booth in the back corridor of hall 9 to play it.īattle Sheep is a more flexible version of the game, now playable by up to four players. Part of the reason why I put this game on the back burner was that it was a remake of an older game, Splits, which I still have. Times Played: 5, with review copy provided by Blue Orangeīattle Sheep is a game that has been on my radar since it was recommended for the Spiel Des Jahres in 2014.Successful gameplay comes down to blocking out your opponents so you can claim large areas for yourself. However, forming a winning strategy requires some thought and planning. "Battle Sheep is remarkably simple to learn - the rules can be explained almost instantly. "A fun strategy game but it does take a certain amount of time to learn how to block and acquire depending on how you move your herd." When all the players can no longer move any of their sheep, the player who occupies the most pastures wins. The original stack is left in place, while the new stack is moved as far as it can go in any direction until it cannot go any farther or it reaches another stack. On a turn, the current player splits any one of his stacks into 2 separate stacks (there will only be one stack to choose from at the beginning of the game). The stacks are placed on an open Pasture space located on the outside perimeter of the playing area created by the players. A "stack" is all the Sheep tokens stacked up on each other to form a single column. Starting with the first player and going in turn order sequence, each player takes all 16 of their Sheep tokens and creates a "stack".The rules suggest the "youngest players". Determine who the first player will be.Players should feel free to create as small or as wide a playing area as they like. All Pasture boards should be connected by at least 1 side. Players now take turns placing one Pasture board at a time to the middle playing area. Each player should take 4 Pasture boards which are all the same.Players should place their Sheep tokens to one side for the moment. To set up the game, first allow the players to select a sheep color of their choice and collect all 16 Sheep tokens of that color. The object of the game is to control the most pastures on the board by strategically placing your sheep and blocking your opponents.Ī different playing board is assembled before every game, so Battle Sheep is full of new challenges every time you play!

There was only a small selection of games, including an OK port of the arcade hit Virtua Fighter, with few new titles expected until later in the year. The machines were expensive and in short supply only a handful of major retailers got them, alienating the rest of the market. “We’ve decided to bring the product to market earlier than scheduled to meet the high consumer demand, to refine our marketing strategy over the summer, prior to the important fall season, and to get a head start on the competition.”īut it was a shambles. “Many Americans have gone to the extent of paying $800 and more for Sega Saturn units from Japan,” said Kalinske in the resulting press release. So on 11 May, at the E3 event, Tom Kalinske went on stage and announced that the Saturn was not only launching early in the US, it was already on the shelves – at the basic price of $399. Nakayama believed that Sega had to get into the US market early and establish a presence before Sony. Sega had an autumn US release for the Saturn all planned out its production line was in motion, retailers were ready. And, although the Saturn was selling well in Japan, shifting almost 500,000 units in its first month, PlayStation was catching up. The 32X was an expensive failure with little software support. But this muddied the waters for the Saturn. He wanted a quick stop-gap to rival the Atari system (which would go on to flop hopelessly) and the US team agreed. The 32X, a semi-32-bit add-on for the old console, was engendered almost entirely by the US R&D team – in fact, the original concept was designed by lead engineers Joe Miller and Marty Franz, who hastily jotted down the idea for a basic 32-bit system on a piece of hotel notepaper while attending the Consumer Electronics show in 1994.Ī typically gritty and mature image from Sony’s early console advertising, bearing the slogan, ‘Do not underestimate the power of PlayStation.’ Photograph: public domainīut the order to go ahead with this curious hybrid came from Sega of Japan president Hayao Nakayama who – as incredible as it may seem today – was concerned not about the looming PlayStation, but about Atari’s Jaguar console. However, the company had to be much more cautious about the US, where it wanted to protect and enhance the huge market share it had torn away from Nintendo. The Japanese office was encouraged to head straight into Saturn development after the launch of the Mega Drive because the machine hadn’t been a huge success in the domestic market. What the divisions faced was a huge challenge in appeasing two very different markets. There were also rumours of a rift between Sega of Japan and Sega of America although it was never quite as simple – or juicy – as that. Sony had one product and one message: PlayStation is the future. Sega meanwhile, had been confusing and alienating its audience and development community with a string of add-ons for the hugely successful (but increasingly dated) Mega Drive, and a wealth of promises about new hardware platforms that never materialised. The company’s chief system designer, Ken Kutaragi, visited developers all over the world, bringing an impressive set of graphics demos (including the famed dinosaur 3D model) and promising a wealth of cool development tools and favourable production deals. Sony had spent 1994 on a global charm offensive. I’ve realized that now I’m able to get the results that actually look better than all of the tools above and I’m doing fine without them. When you spent money on it, for sure you try to study them better.Īll of this ended when I’ve discovered free (open source actually) raw converter RawTherapee which has negative inversion tool built in. It’s not that I was ignorant and didn’t read their manuals/forums/tutorials. I thought I was doing fine until I noticed that, if I was being honest with myself, colors on my conversions looked bad and different software from the list above, while giving different results, provided just different shades of mediocrity (if I may cite Simon & Garfunkel!). In the process I’ve ditched the Plustek and switched to DSLR scanning using Nikon D750/macro lens/home built scanning rig. Over the years I’ve used the following software for doing it: As you know, inversion of color negatives can be tricky. There was a pause in 2011-2016 but since then I’m back in the film game, actively shooting it and using both labs and scanning at home. I started shooting film in 2006 and was scanning myself since 2010 using Plustek 7600. If you’re impressed, read on! My perspectiveįirst, a couple of words on my background so you understand my perspective better. Systematic use of stamped labels dates appears to date from around the fourth century BCE. ĭiana Twede has shown that amphorae used in Mediterranean trade between 1500 and 500 BCE exhibited a wide variety of shapes and markings, which provided information for purchasers during exchange. Eckhardt and Bengtsson have argued that in the absence of a capitalist system, branding was connected to social systems and cultural contexts that brand development was a consumer-initiated activity rather than the manufacturer-push normally associated with Western brand management practices. In China, place-names appear to have developed independently during the Han Dynasty (220 BC-AD 200) brand names and place names were relatively commonplace on goods. Inscriptions on the surface denote a specific place of manufacture, "finest oil of Tjehenu," a region in modern-day Libya. For instance, an object found in a royal burial tomb in Abydos (southern Egypt) and dating to around 3,000 B.C.E., carries brand elements that would be very familiar to modern consumers. Producers began by attaching simple stone seals to products which, over time, were transformed into clay seals bearing impressed images, often associated with the producer's personal identity thus providing information about the product and its quality. David Wengrow has found archaeological evidence of brands, which often included origin of manufacture, dating to around 4,000 years ago. In antiquity, informal branding which included details such as the name of manufacturer and place of origin were used by consumers as important clues as to product quality. In some regions or industries, country of origin labelling may adopt unique local terms such as terroir used to describe wine appellations based on the specific region where grapes are grown and wine manufactured. Country of origin labelling ( COL) is also known as place-based branding, the made-in image or the "nationality bias". There are differing rules of origin under various national laws and international treaties. For multinational brands, CO may include multiple countries within the value-creation process. There is a misconception of the barcode number indicating the product's country of origin. A UPC Barcode that starts with 7 would have a country code of 070 – 079. UPC Barcodes do not show the leading zero.
